Belts and testing
Belts are earned
at your pace.
Karate runs white to black in eight belts. Jiu-jitsu runs white to black in five, with up to four stripes on each. Between belts, stripes mark the work, so a kid can see the month they had.
You are invited to test when your instructor says you are ready, not when the calendar does. Nobody is held back to fill a room, and nobody is promoted to keep a parent happy. A test is a class with a witness: you show the material for your rank in front of the room, and either it is there or it is not yet. Not yet is a normal result. Most students who hear it pass the next quarter.
